MY FELLA HID HIS MURDERER PAST

I’VE just found out that my boyfriend killed a man some time ago.

It was years before I met him and he claims that he was wild and headstrong then.

But I’m angry and upset that he has also lied about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. He told me the guy who died was a drug addict who attacked him, and that he reacted in self-defence.

But a friend of my brother’s has told me that it was the other way round. My fella was the one who was high and attacked the victim over a bottle of cider.

My boyfriend keeps begging me to put the past behind us and move on. He claims that he deeply regrets all the mistakes he made and that no-one feels more guilty and ashamed than he does.

What’s done is done. He’s served his time and now he’s a free man. If the British justice system has seen fit to release him, then why can’t I?

I do see his point and I do love him. I know that we all make mistakes in life. Loads of us go off the straight and narrow.

But killing a guy for a bottle of cheap booze? I don’t know how anybody could do that.

Why am I getting into bed at night and having sex with a man with blood on his hands?

If anything, I have become obsessed with the whole case. I’ve been to the library and looked up local newspaper clippings. I’ve talked to people who were around at the time and I’ve even found out where the victim’s family live. I’m so tempted to knock on the door to hear their side of the story.

And there’s something else to consider too – can a leopard ever change its spots?

If my boyfriend gets back in with a bad crowd and starts taking drugs again, could he kill for a second time? Might he turn on me?

Sometimes I look at him when he’s watching TV or driving the car and realise that I don’t actually know him at all. Please help!

JANE SAYS: I think you need to take some time away from your boyfriend in order to think long and hard about how you feel.

Clearly you’re suffering from mixed emotions right now. You love the man you wake up with every morning but his past is dark and confused. There is still so much that you don’t really know, so many secrets and so many lies.

No-one could blame your boyfriend for wishing to put the past behind him. But, as his partner and the person who shares his bed every night, you deserve to hear the absolute truth from his lips. Give yourself some breathing space and then sit him down and ask him to start at A and go right through to Z.

Sadly if you still can’t come to terms with the truth, or he continues to give you the story that he’d like you to believe, then maybe you’ll have to move on.

As for visiting the victim’s family, I really wouldn’t recommend it.

You don’t know what you might find yourself embroiled in.

It’s time that you started trust ing your instincts and be your own person.
